Redthread is a dynamic youth work charity whose vision is a society in which all young people lead healthy, safe and happy lives. To do this, we empower at-risk, disadvantaged young people away from violence and crime. With youth violence becoming one of the UK’s most pressing social issues, Redthread specialises in helping children and young people face the following challenges: involvement in serious violence, mental health problems, risk of offending, unstable lifestyles, gang affiliation, abuse and exploitation. Our pioneering Youth Violence Intervention Programme was the first of its kind in the UK and currently operates in London and the Midlands. The service embeds highly-trained youth workers in the emergency departments of hospitals where they meet victims of violence aged 11-25. They provide a skilled intervention that utilises what we call a ‘teachable moment’: a powerful opportunity for reflection and reassessment in moments of crisis. This increases belief in a positive future and engagement with beneficial services. With the support of the Stone Family Foundation, we have helped to inspire positive change in the lives of hundreds of people to reduce their involvement in violence, crime and risk of reoffending.
As we enter our 25th year at Redthread, we have a wealth of experience and insight in the fields of youth work and a Public Health approach to youth violence. As a founding member of HIVE, UK’s Hospital-based Interrupting Violence Exchange, Redthread shares best practice and understanding of the challenges faced by young people. Furthermore, we are a lead secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Knife Crime. Working closely with Barnardo’s, we share our learning and ensure that the voices of the young people who we work with are heard and their needs are considered in wider debates around policy change and youth violence.
