Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP)

Strategic partnership  |  Urban sanitation services  |  Waste-to-resource

WSUP is a not-for-profit company that helps transform cities to benefit the millions who lack access to water and sanitation. As the urban specialist in water and sanitation, WSUP has helped nearly 18 million people access better water and sanitation services to date.

WSUP works with local providers, enabling them to develop services, build infrastructure and attract funding so that they can reach low-income communities. It has a strong focus on financial viability as a key aspect of providing sustainable services over the long term, and is committed to proving the business case for enterprises to deliver services to the poorest residents, on a commercial basis.

WSUP also works to improve the broader enabling environment, to create a more appealing environment for WASH enterprises focused on the poorest citizens – for example through improved regulations, clearer citywide roles and responsibilities, or initiatives that can stimulate consumer demand.

WSUP’s deep understanding of the cities in which it works, as well as its close partnerships with city institutions, enables it to identify business opportunities and incubate promising innovations so that they can develop into successful enterprises in urban WASH.

The Foundation has a four-year strategic partnership with WSUP which supports WSUP’s business plan, from 2016 to 2020.
